Update
by: Deanne

Zoie is doing well. She loves running with me on my bike and that's it's been cooling off for 5-6 weeks now we're getting in a lot of extra exercise time.
Zoie passed her canine good citizen exam back in the winter and we are still working on obedience training almost daily. She is doing well with my other dogs, no attacks now in about a year and half!
I did recently have a behavior specialist come evaluate the dynamics between Zoie and the other dogs and she made a few suggestions to insure peace but for the most part she felt Zoie's management program was correct and proven to be successful. If anyone has dog aggression issues going on, I posted her entire evaluation and management program from the behaviorist on the forum. There's some good info. there.

Thanks for the info
by: Jan

We have a BIG Dane named Duke. We rescued him from Calif. at 16 months. He is now 3 1/2 years. He's the coolest dog. He loves the couch and the bed. He's not fond of water unless our lab cross, Maggie is doing it. He copies everything she does. She is in charge of him. He was given up because he had vicious encounters with A male Hunting dog. There was a male and female of the same breed and then him. (Can't remember the breed right now) He and Maggie do so well together. He loves her. So glad to hear you didn't give up. It was so hard for Duke when his family gave him up. He loves us and is devoted to us now but you could tell he was lost for awhile.

I can not comment on the ferocity of a dane attacking another dog, but the rest of your story is like my Chloe. She is never farther away than my arm can reach. I am a dog love and have been all my life, but the love a Dane gives is special.

Beautiful baby you have and she is blessed that you did not give up on her.

Zoie's Update
by: Deanne

I just wanted to follow up to say that Zoie is doing well and behaving herself. She's been very busy trying to adopt(steal) my son's new stingray stuffed animal to join her pack of babies. Thanks for the nice comments, and my hope is that if you are having any trouble with your doge like i've encountered with Zoie teat you don't give up, look for help everywhere you can think of and be willing to work hard to be your dane's solution. Believe me, sometimes it takes a lot of extra work but isn't what you get in return from your dane worth it, absolutely! Not every dog has the "standard" temperment etc. regardless to breed. We have an unbelievable overpopulation epedimic, caused by people allowing their dogs to accidently breed instead of spaying and neutering and people breeding for money instead of to improve the breed. Please, make sure you check out the breeder you are considering purchasing from, Never buy over the internet or pet stores (90% chance you will be buying from a puppymill and a 100% chance it will not be from a responsible breeder!) or better yet consider adoption. Yes, there are more unknowns when adopting, but I have been in the field of dog rescue long enough to tell you that most shelter dogs aren't broken or problem dogs, they are there because of their owners. Dogs Need socialization and training to allow them to be part of All the aspects of our lives. I have so many people want to greet Zoie when we're in public, and they'll say "I could never bring my dog out like this because ..." It saddens me to hear this, and the crazy excuses people give us for givig up their dogs. Zoie was given up because she got too big and was unruly, duh! she's a dane and you have done No training with her. Honestly, the next person that tells me they have to give up their dog because of the economy and they can't afford the dog and then drive off in a new vehicle, I may chase them down and give them a huge piece of my mind! Really, I love to see all of you care so much for your danes, it's so refreashing and brightens my day, that's why I visit this website! Don't forget you are your dane's guardian and the giver of all things yummy :)
