The Goods on Mantle Great Danes

Mantle Great Danes sport a "black blanket" over a pure white base coat.

Mantle Great Danes.

Very similar in markings to the Boston Terrier, Mantle Danes were referred to as Boston until the late 1990's. In many countries they are still called Boston Great Danes to this day.

Contrast of black and white colors on a mantle's face give it kind of a friendly, calm, confident and caring look. At least we think so :)

TIP: Most sought after mantle Great Danes are pure black and white with no other colors such as merle, blue, brown or fawn. Mantle patterns may vary, a pure white muzzle, collar and front is most desirable.

AKC standard for Mantle Great Danes:

The color shall be black and white with a solid black blanket extending over the body; black skull with white muzzle; white blaze is optional; whole white collar is preferred; a white chest; white on part or whole of forelegs and hind legs; white tipped black tail. A small white marking in the blanket is acceptable, as is a break in the white collar.
Any variance in color or markings as described above shall be faulted to the extent of the deviation. Any Great Dane, which does not fall within the above color classifications, must be disqualified.

Interesting Mantle Facts:

Breeding harlequins will produce mantle Dane puppies, as well as harlequins, merles, and mismarked blacks. Interestingly, a mantle/mantle breeding will not produce harlequins, most all pups will be mantle with occasional mismarked blacks.

Many breeders use mantle Great Danes for harlequin breeding, the result is mantles or harlequins. Breeding a mantle/harlequin pair has benefits! Mantle/harlequin breeding eliminates all together the chance of white Dane pups with vision and hearing problems, so often found in harlequin/harlequin litters.

Blue & merle mantles?
